Khalifa released his first mixtape, Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania, in 2005. When Grinberg finally met the 16-year-old artist, he immediately decided he wanted to work with him, later telling HitQuarters: "Even though he wasn't all the way developed you could just tell that he was a diamond in the rough, and that with some polishing, guidance and backing he could become something special." Khalifa signed to the label shortly after and began a seven-year period of artist development. Rostrum Records president Benjy Grinberg first heard about Wiz Khalifa in 2004 when the rapper's contribution to a mixtape of various new Pittsburgh artists attracted his interest. Career 2005–2008: Early mixtapes and Show and Prove The management of the studio was so impressed by his lyrics that they allowed Khalifa to record for free. īy the age of 15 he was regularly recording his music in a studio called I.D. Khalifa stated to that the name also came from being called "young Wiz 'cause I was good at everything I did, and my granddad is Muslim, so he gave me that name he felt like that's what I was doing with my music." He got a tattoo of his stage name on his 17th birthday. His stage name is derived from Khalifa, an Arabic word meaning "successor", and wisdom, which was shortened to Wiz when Khalifa was a young boy. Moreover, DSLR supports zoom in or out and sharp focus to show the product in detail. Unlike smartphones, DSLR cameras use large image sensors that result in better resolution and clarity. Since most live shopping videos are vertical, and the retailers’ demand for high-quality streaming increases, CameraFi Live is updated to support DSLR vertical broadcasts. However, small suppliers cannot easily rent a studio and purchase high-quality streaming equipment. As the trend surges dramatically, retailers start looking for professional live streaming solutions to keep customers interested and sell more products. On the dance floor, my avatar grooves gently to the music. I decide to explore and wander around to see what people in this strange little universe get up to. He tells me to take my time to explore and ask any questions. I type back, asking how this thing works. Immediately, a man calling himself “Phantom Lord” pops up in the chat box. It’s also clunky and non-intuitive to use, and the movements on screen are jerky and often freeze or even crash entirely. I played a lot of The Sims c.2002 – 2006 and, I have to say, the graphics of RLC are less impressive than even the earliest versions of that game. Entering the virtual world, you pop up in a courtyard with a dance floor, a pool, a bar and a DJ.Įveryone lands in the same spot when they log in, and if you don’t move quickly you end up with other people arriving on top of you, which confuses the rudimentary graphics immensely. Once you’re in-game you can somewhat alter the hairstyle and body composition of your character, but even then it’s within pretty narrow parameters. All four male avatars are white and could be described as “conventionally attractive”. Of the four female avatars, all are thin and three out of four are white (one is black.) Outfit choices are jeans and t-shirt, pink clubbing dress, sexy schoolgirl, or a skimpy red top/skirt combo. The options are, it must be said, limited. Once you’ve downloaded “Curio,” the system that hosts RLC, you pick a username and an avatar. Having been there only once and very fleetingly, I cannot comment as to the resemblance. The virtual world in RLC is based around Amsterdam’s Red Light district. Obviously, being endlessly curious about the possibilities for using tech to improve my sex life, I just had to try it. I could not, unfortunately, find a break down of the genders – though I suspect, as with so many other adult platforms, it heavily skews male. “ Red Light Center” (hereafter, RLC) first flashed across my radar when I was researching my recent article on sex tech for couples in long-distance relationships.įirst established in 2006, the platform has an estimated 1.5 million users. And sexual modifications were extensive in this game, from the ability to make avatars pole dance or wear skimpy clothes to virtual BDSM clubs and red light districts. Second Life, too, has long been acknowledged as a place where people go to have anonymous cyber-sex through their avatars. And a lot of people used it for BDSM and domination games.” “Of course, you couldn’t actually make your characters have sex,” he qualified, “but you could make them do movements that could be loosely interpreted as sex acts. He’s been an avid video gamer since the early 1990s and regaled me with stories of Neverwinter Nights adult-only servers and user mods. My partner laughed his head off when I told him what my latest assignment was about. But what does this have to do with sex? Well, like the internet and virtual reality and smartphone technology before it, the MMORPG model has for a long time been co-opted for sexual purposes. World of Warcraft took the genre to the next level, with a reported 100 million user accounts in 2014. Since then, the genre – where huge numbers of players log in to the same virtual world – has exploded in popularity. The first MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) is believed to have hit the web in 1996. Smartphones are now near-ubiquitous in the Western world, and we can now use them to control our partner’s vibrators from anywhere we want. Virtual reality has been on the scene in some form since the 1960s, but recently there’s been an enormous buzz around virtual reality porn and the opportunities – and issues – surrounding this technology. People invented the internet, and now an estimated 4 percent of the whole web is pornography – that’s a lot of porn, even if this figure is down from an earlier estimate of 13 percent. It has long been understood that if a technology exists, someone at some point will repurpose it in order to use it for sexual purposes. I suppose it’s one of those things you have to conquer in order to do what you love. Reading up on these articles I’ve been given a new sense of hope, maybe I may not be good at math now, maybe not tomorrow, but for sure I can the day after tomorrow if I just work hard enough. I’m starting to doubt myself that I’m capable of even handling higher mathematics just to be awarded that golden diploma that says you’re qualified to build and think. I love to take apart electronics like my Xbox, built model jets as a hobby when I was younger, go to an Aviation technician school while still in high school, and my one Calculus class has me in that rock in a hard place. Written in collaboration with Eric Coale. Today, his engineering and fabrication firm builds pilot plants and modular process systems, integrates automated packaging systems and machine vision systems, and builds custom machinery for manufacturers around the world. As a young boy, he too had a passion for understanding how things work. John is a Principal Electrical Engineer and the President of EPIC Systems, Inc. Don’t let a couple of pesky math classes stop you from being a great engineer! Still had to pass it to cross finish line. Like anything in life, there will be things you just have to survive to achieve the goals you have for yourself. I still couldn’t tell you a credit from a debit, and I have an MBA. Suck it up! Every one of us have taken classes in which we “toughed it out.” For me, one of those classes was Financial Accounting. Yes, in engineering school the math sequence can be intense. Don’t let the fact that you don’t see the redeeming social value of calculus get in the way of becoming an engineer! If you look around your garage and think “I can make an automated robot that takes the trash out from these miscellaneous pieces and parts,” you might make a great engineer. In engineering, what matters more than love of math is being a person that wants to understand how things work, likes to take things apart, and likes to put things together to make the world a better place. Thomas Edison did poorly in his math classes in school, but went on to patent over 1000 inventions. Congratulations! You just learned a practical reason to care about parabolas! That point has an amplifier that can take those very weak signals and present a signal that allows you to watch the Rams beat the Bears on national TV. No matter where those radio waves hit the surface of the dish, they all bounce to the same point (the focus). What if your teacher asked “Do you have Dish TV?”… Then went on to explain that your dish collects radio waves from outer space. Let’s take a parabola as an example… y = x 2. Engineering is not so much being good at math but more about having a passion for understanding how things work and interact. “Wait… Did you say algebra?! So you’re telling me that the majority of math thatĮngineers do every day is the same stuff that I learned from Brother “Jumpin’ Joe” O’Meara my junior year of high school?” Kind of makes me want to brandish my K+E slide rule with 22 scales. Engineers get giddy with excitement the handful of times they get to use the TAN key on their HP-85 scientific calculator. If you look at what they do, day in and day out, you will find that they need to be very good at algebra. However, the reality is that the vast majority of engineers that graduate will work in industry. Granted, a small percentage of graduate engineers will work in a R&D setting that will require high level math. More than the fear of crashing or blowing off a finger, they are afraid of the “math” that it takes to become an engineer. What they don’t realize is that it took a fair amount of engineering ingenuity to accomplish these tasks. I hear a lot of kids say, “I don’t think I could be an engineer because I’m not good at math.” Yet these same kids have built go carts, figured out how to make things go boom, and have found ways to launch potatoes with incredible force. |
